Sailing 101
Sailing is an awesome skill to have. Pirating and smuggling are two of the most esteemed professions and a basic grasp of knots, wind direction and esoteric nautical terms are essential in both fields. If you can even pretend to know how to sail, you can walk out onto any dock in the world, talk your way onto a cruising sailboat and get paid to travel to some beautiful places. I’ve done this a few times and can teach you how too.
Teacher's Notes
I don’t have a boat, but I can start with some stuff on the dry erase board, and I think it would be pretty cheap for a bunch of us to throw in for a day sailboat rental. I’ve got a lifetime of experience. My first boat was a 7 ft. dinghy called Bru Ha Ha and I crewed on a 67 ft. luxury sailboat for a summer. If you want to travel the world by crewing, I’ll tell you who to talk to, where to sign up, and what seasickness drugs to get (all the good stuff is banned in the U.S.)

I know it’s last minute, but anybody up for some sailing this weekend? I unfortunately can’t offer a boat, but I can offer my time and enthusiasm! I could also look into rentals if there is enough interest. . .
Amazing day on the water yesterday. Bonus points for lock box opening to get the key and cycling in. It was great meeting everyone and I hope to do it again.
Thanks Alex! That was awesome. Great day for sailing on the bay, we lucked out with the weather.
I posted some pics on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/drtjr#/album.php?aid=2080660&id=504079&ref=nf
Sailing 101 kicked off yesterday with a spin around the bay. Fantastic day for it and we only lost one crew member to the depths. Note this class is for purists, no engine, we sail out of the marina much to the dismay of the bland old men sipping coffee on their polished yachts
ooops, sorry to confuse (and sorry for all the emails!). i meant: 2P at the Marina still, but 12:45 leaving from SF (arrive in W. oakland ~1 >> bike to pickup key >> bike to marina to arrive ~2).
BTW, slip is J216 so meet at the gate for J Dock.
aye aye. can we make it 12:45P instead? I need to leave a little earlier b/c we’ll be getting off at west oakland to pick up a key (we just changed slips) and biking from there — about a 6-7 mi bike ride. you cool with that distance? if not, I can give you directions from a closer BART.
if you’re down for the ride, meet me outside 833 Market Street (the James Bong building) between 4th and 5th. let me know!
best,
-zb
Doug in. Zach are you still taking Powell BART? I will meet you there at 1:15 with bike.
Great! Tomorrow at 2 at the Berkeley Marina.

Anyone want to BART+Bike over with me?
Ravi, are you in? Alex, AlexCuz, Me, Ravi and Doug makes 5. Based on the size of the boat, that really should be our max, but if Ravi or Doug or AlexCuz is out, I think we could have room for one more. Let’s get a final count today if we can, yeah?

Yep, I’m in for Thursday at 2pm. My cousin is staying with me, do we have room for him?
I think 4 is a good number but we could probably push it to 5 if there’s a lot of interest — I don’t want to exclude people.
Alex, you gonna be back online any time soon? Do you want to confirm 2P for Thursday? If so, I’ll probably be leaving SF by BART (Powell Street) around 1:15 with my bike and biking to the Berkeley Marina. Others could meet there or join me for the BART+Bike.

2 pm Thursday works for me. How many can come and where are we meeting?
Alex responded to me by email (he’s on the road): 2P Thursday works for him to teach. Can anyone else make that time?
Alex,
How is the wind in the early afternoon? Could you do a 2PM-ish sail this Thursday?

hey guys, are we going to be able to make this one happen? I’d be down to chip in and rent a boat that’s big enough for a crew of us to go out…
sorry dudes, no one replied. we’ll get this back on the calendar in june. i apologize for letting this slip — definitely looking forward to doing it soon.
Nice, thanks for the reminder guys! I totally forgot. I put it on the co-op calendar, so the boat is reserved — that’s the good news. The bad news is that I made plans to go out of town for the weekend. Soooo…. it might still work — I’m going to check with a couple of the other co-op members to see if they are interested in a class. If so, then you guys can get on the boat with them instead of me. I’ll get back to you via this thread in just a bit.
Let’s do the 23rd, wind permitting.
Alex, myself and 2 others would be ideal (4 people total).
I’ve reserved the boat on our co-op calendar.
Who else is in?
-zb
Alex: Yes sir! Upcoming weekend days I’m available are Sat May 2, Sat May 23. I can also probably do some late afternoon sails (say 4PMish?) on weekdays with some advance planning!
-zb
Zach, your boat sounds perfect for a little daysail, scheduling a class next step?
I don’t know anyone with a boat, but I shopped around a bit, we could get 7 or 8 people on a 30’ boat for less than $300 for the day
(con’t) …to have 2 newbies and 1 instructor, or at most 3 newbies. Boat is crappy. Engine sucks. No radio. More than 15 knots = sketchy. Me = zberke or zberkegmail.com
I am the co-owner of a boat slipped in the Berkeley Marina. I’m trying to learn to sail it and I’d be down to share it for something like this. Big Caveat: I’d have to be on the boat otherwise my co-owners might flip their shit.
It’d be appropriate t
@toddsampson do you have a boat? maybe we can pair you up with Alex to teach this class? It’s prime time for sailing…
for sure, I just put out some feelers to see how much it would cost to rent a boat for the day. anyone know anyone who knows someone with a boat?
alex, still up for teaching?? weather’s getting perfect for sailing!

Hi Nicole, I’d love to join you sailing – I don’t have a boat, am new to San Francisco, but would love to get out on the water!
